BTW, you can use the following commands to configure update-alternatives
to handle GCC:
$ sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/gcc gcc
/usr/bin/gcc-4.1 33 --slave /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-4.1 --slave
/usr/bin/gcov gcov /usr/bin/gcov-4.1
$ sudo update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/gcc gcc
/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 42 --slave /usr/bin/g++ g++ /usr/bin/g++-4.2 --slave
/usr/bin/gcov gcov /usr/bin/gcov-4.2
That breaks your system.
Can you please elaborate? It seems to work for me.
