Well, CSTables is currently just a prototype. However, for your needs, you may want to have a look at OPeNDAP (http://www.opendap.org/), and in particular to pydap (http://pydap.org/) which is a Pythonic implementation of OPeNDAP with a plugin for PyTables (http://pydap.org/plugins/hdf5.html).
