In PyTables 1.x series the test suite is not part of the package, so it
is not installed by default (this has changed for 2.x series). If you
have installed from binary packages, the way to test your installation
is described in the section 2.2.2 (PyTables package installation). In
particular, you will need to download the sources and run the test suite
from there.

Anyway, there is not a (stable) higher version than 1.4, so you don't
need to upgrade. We are in the way to release 2.0, but it is still not
ready for spread use.

HTH,
