Well, a lot of things would be nice to be included in PyTables. Having said 
this, my experience is that things work better when you have a real 
motivation to do some job. So, do you really need something like the packet 
table interface or it is just that you want to contribute to the project? If 
the former, then go ahead. But if your case is the latter, I think there are 
a lot of other things than can be very useful to PyTables, like help 
improving the web site (remember, it is a wiki!), revising documentation, 
contributing fixes for open tickets, suggesting paths for better usability (a 
very important goal for PyTables), providing packages for Linux distributions 
or gateways for other formats just to name a few important tasks.

Agreed, coding is the most funny thing for most open source contributors but 
not the only one (not even the most important for a project), but I know that 
having fun is very important from a personal point of view ;-)  In any case, 
whatever contribution you can make is very welcome indeed!
