The THG helpdesk has quickly sent me the answer to this problem.  It all 
boils down to that, for HDF5 1.8.3, the THG has fixed an inconsistency 
(apparently reported by myself some *years* ago, if I believe them :-\) 
with the filters API.  I've added a fix for this to the repository, so 
that people wanting to compile against 1.8.3 can do it easily.  See:

I'll probably send another announcement to the list so that more people 
can get aware of this issue.
