IANAL, but the spirit of the license is that you are free to do
whatever you want with the source for your own purposes - apart from
distribute it. Indeed; reports of compilers, optimisation flags, and
instruction sets are always interesting.

That said, you shouldn't have to build it "just to make it work".

Can you be a little more specific about what doesn't work? The Python
release team are very good about compatibility, especially this late
in the cycle - a 2.6.6 version isn't likely to be necessary. What
python are you using (python.org|EPD|ActiveState|other)? I gather from
your previous emails that you aren't using EPD, just cherry-picking
modules from there. You can get into all sorts of trouble mixing
installers, easy_install, python setup.py install etc...
