Don't worry.  Keeping compatibility is one of my main goals too.  No, I 
don't think removing the FIELD_N_NAME and FIELD_N_FILL would reduce 
compatibility as most of libraries out there will use info in the HDF5 
type for getting the info kept in FIELD_* attributes (in fact, these 
should be considered an unnecessary duplication).  Hmm, I should report 
this and ask for their removal in HDF5 upstream.
