Unfortunately, numpy is actually the smaller of the dependency issues for
PyTables on PyPy.

PyPy does not support extension modules at all, and the PyPy folks seem
unlikely to add it in the near future.  The tiny numpy for PyPy is
a re-implementation of the numpy API.

It would be nice to move to PyPy for many reasons, but the stars haven't
aligned themselves quite rightly yet.
