Just wanted to mention that there's Gitter (https://gitter.im) which is an in-browser chat room targeted to open source projects. From what I see, it supports Markdown and integrates with a bunch of services.
I don't use IRC or Gitter, just thought I would mention it in case others wanted to try it out.
