FWIW, the analogous systemtap patch works great on Linux, or, at least Fedora 13+/RHEL 6 (though beware: not all Linux distributions have systemtap working properly out of the box, alas). See: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/SystemtapStaticProbes#Python_2 and http://bugs.python.org/issue4111 though this stalled due to lack of documentation (I started writing some, but got bogged down in the differences between the tapsets and the static markers; sorry).
