Should this be:
if mode and (not mode.startswith(('r', 'U')) or '+' in mode):
to match:
> - if (*mode) {
...
> - if (!(*mode == 'r' || *mode == 'U') || strchr(mode, '+')) {
> - PyErr_Format(PyExc_ValueError,
> - "invalid file open mode %.200s", mode);
