That said, you should read the README files included in the source directory, in particular, the step about running ./configure. There are OS X specific options documented in the Mac/README file. Also, be aware that Python 2.6 is obsolete and was released before the most recent releases of OS X and Xcode; you will likely run into problems trying to build it on them. If you really need 2.6, you might want to consider installing it from one of the third-party open source distributions for OS X, like MacPorts, Homebrew, or Fink.
