The following syntax is broken:
if $PYTHON = not-found; then

...
checking for python3.4... python3.4
python3.4: can't open file '=': [Errno 2] No such file or directory
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
...

You probably want to use 'if test $PYTHON = not-found'.
