Stefan Krah added the comment: The change seems to slow down the pi float benchmark. Run this and hit Ctrl-C after the first decimal result appears:
./python Modules/_decimal/tests/bench.py I've run the benchmark seven times and the average for float is something like 8-10% slower (64-bit Linux, Core 2 Duo).
