Here are some simpler examples of the bug:
re.compile('.*yz', re.S).findall('xyz')
re.compile('.?yz', re.S).findall('xyz')
re.compile('.+yz', re.S).findall('xyz')
Unfortunately I find it difficult to see what's happening when single-stepping
through the code because of the macros. :-(
