Michelle Arzul added the comment: Apparently it only occurs with the Ubuntu packaged versions of Python and numpy. Somebody who was able to reproduce my problem had it with python-2.7.4-0ubuntu1-amd64 and python-numpy-1:1.7.1-1ubuntu1-amd64 which exhibited the same behaviour. Apparently python-dbg and python-numpy-dbg do not reproduce the error.
