Judging by OpenSSL's code, it replaces the already called ECDH curve.
(from s3_lib.c:
if (s->cert->ecdh_tmp != NULL)
EC_KEY_free(s->cert->ecdh_tmp);
s->cert->ecdh_tmp = ecdh;
