Joshua Landau added the comment: I phrased that badly. Whilst I can see minor simplifications to BUILD_MAP_UNPACK, the only way to add more information to CALL_FUNCTION_XXX would be through EXTENDED_ARG. This seems like it would outweigh any benefits, and the tiny duplication of error checking removed would be far dwarfed by the unpacking code in CALL_FUNCTION_XXX.
