Mark Roseman added the comment: Just as a point of information and possible future reference, there is a 'tklib' (collection of Tk-related modules written in Tcl) module called 'ctext' which does syntax highlighting as well as implements the line numbering thing (also using a text widget beside the main text). There may be some tricks in there to steal.
