New submission from Barry A. Warsaw: Over in https://github.com/aio-libs/aiosmtpd we have a Controller class which is very handy for testing and other cases. I realized that this isn't really aiosmtpd specific, and with just a few tweaks it could be appropriate for the stdlib.
I have a branch ready for a pull request.
