The fact that array is old, rusty and slightly broken doesn't meen we should propagate that brokenness to other Python modules. Also, as David said, the fact that you think there is a bug here doesn't mean everyone would agree. Finally, the behaviour you seem to be looking for could be added as a separated API or an optional method argument.
