Anthony's spot on. Even with a release script and PEP 101, it's still
pretty labor intensive.  Of course, Python 2.7 and 3.1 still have no
official RM <wink> so if you want firsthand experience, the opportunity is
available.

I would actually be interested in this. However, I still am quite
inexperienced and gladly step aside for anyone who's been around
longer.

Benjamin, you've done some good work on the release.py script and are always available on IRC when I'm doing a release, so I think you'd be a good candidate. Will you be at PyCon 2009? It would be nice to cross-sign some gpg keys.
