Are you using Ubuntu? If so, Seahorse (the default key manager in Ubuntu) should prompt you automatically for your passphrase and cache it. Keychain might be interfering with it, so try to uninstall it first. Then verify in Applications → Accessories → Passwords and Encryption Keys that Seahorse sees your SSH key.
