Acceptance for Py2.4 partially hinges on how quickly third party apps
have their binaries updated.

I wonder if there is anything we can do to help.

There didn't seem to be any problems compiling it against 2.4. I managed

to get some version up and running, but problems with the required 
shared libraries(I seem to have many, incompatible versions of jpeg 
around...) killed my enthusiasm and I returned to 2.3.
