Doesn't that just sort on the str.lower or unicode.lower method object?
py> sorted(['A', u'b', 'C'], key=operator.attrgetter('lower'))
[u'b', 'C', 'A']
py> sorted(['A', u'b', 'C'], key=partialmethod('lower')) # after
fixing arg -> args bug
['A', u'b', 'C']
