Thanks everybody for contributing to this discussion. I didn't expect it to become this extensive. I think that by now, everybody has had their chance to voice their opinion. It seems safe to conclude that there is no consensus on this topic.
So what I'm planning to do is to write a small extension module that implements some of the ideas that came up in this discussion, and see how they perform in the wild. It will give us an idea of what works, what doesn't, and what the user demand is for such functionality, and will help us if this issue happens to turn up again at some point in the future.
