You're of course preaching to the choir here. Somehow we need to do a better job convincing the Python-using public to pay attention to alphas and betas, especially software consultants like Greg Black. Another area where this particular process broke down was that there simply wasn't already a test case for the fairly common case of calling strftime with a six-zeroes pad to format a simple date. Had it been there already, it would have been discovered when Brett added the range checks.
