If you want to do something useful, pick an existing project (several
have already been named) that intrigues you and work on filling in one
of the holes. I can imagine that this might be as educational as, for
instance, compiling a toy subset of Python.
The type inferencing algorithm of ShedSkin might be particularly
interesting to study and improve. They also need a Windows maintainer...
