(For those that haven't read the tracker discussion, it's long, but worth skimming to get a better idea of the various points of view). +1 on the general idea, but I haven't looked at the patches in order to be able to comment on the specifics (except that following any of the test_warnings, test_heapq, test_pickle, test_io, etc. styles of testing parallel implementations should be fine).
