Nightly builds are a lot of work to setup and keep running smoothly, and the rate of change isn't high enough to justify them. I proposed to Larry originally that we start the alphas 6 months after 3.3.0, but he didn't like that idea, so I since reduced it to simply doing alpha 1 early so that it din't mean any more work for the release team.
