Ignoring Ben's assertion regarding the legitimacy of async wrap_socket() (which seems to render this entire conversation moot), if you still really want to go this route, could ctypes be abused to provide the missing implementation from the underlying libs? It'd be a hack, but it would only be necessary during bootstrapping.
