This is a very good point that the "80 columns is too short" crowd forget. 80 columns is *already* significantly longer (20-25%) than the optimum column width for prose text. It is a compromise between optimimum reading width for prose (about 65 columns of monospaced text) and the needs of program code, which does not always work well with word-wrapping.
