Seriously, the role Peter played in this thread is undertaken by many members of the group. They are usually the ones who've been around c.l.py for a long-ish time, and know "the rules" (which, since we don't have a FAQ, are entirely unwritten).
By and large we like to run a civil list, and politely pointing out what appear to be transgressions is the best way to keep things that way. You probably realize that c.l.py isn't a moderated newsgroup.
