The best answer to this is: if you aren't stuck using a version of Python prior to 2.4, don't use os.path.walk but use os.walk() instead...
I believe os.walk was introduced in 2.3 (according to the docs[1]), so unless you're using a really old Python, you should be able to use it.
I also agree that os.walk is *much* simpler.
