I think this is a relatively recent development. At the
time the tutorial was written, and the older parts of
the standard library, there wasn't any established
convention.
Hopefully the stdlib naming will gradually get ironed
out as the oldest bits get deprecated. The tutorial
could probably do with being updated, too.
