Besides the marketing argument, python never had a "hype".

Both PHP and ruby(Rails to be precise) got widespread because they could at one point do "one" thing better than the competition. From there on, they had more ressources (developer time) and grew fast and beyond the original problem domain. Now you can write GUI apps in PHP, great!
