It's part of the standard Python distribution.

Sure. I was just emphasizing the fact that it might be a larger contribution to write such a module in the first place than to fix a bug in it. The mere fact that the existing module seems valuable enough for you to want to use it suggests that the effort that you are putting into getting your bug fixed in the mainline distribution is worth it.
