This is plainly not true, otherwise the parser would be throwing syntax errors at you all the time.  Whether they have semantic meaning to the parser is more debatable.

That's funny - arguing semantics over the difference between syntactic and semantic.  If we're not careful, this conversation could become recursive and blow up the Internet! :)
