This is a general problem for IDEs, and type information isn't always helpful. The number of times I have had to add useless bits of code to cast something to (uint8_t *) because I want to see the bytes and the IDE will not give up on trying to interpret them for me.

And people wonder why I stick to gdb when at all possible :-)
