adding a shared library has been discussed with upstream. Upstream does not want to support it as it does not want to deal with issues which arise from incompatibilities between different shared library build options. I don't think its worth the trouble to fix this in a Debian specific way.
Concerning the ugly way to use the package, Fedora adopted the approach to use pkg-config to abstract the installation path and sources which could be added to the Debian package too.
