Hello there - A small voice in the wilderness ... I am trying to delve
back into scientific programming after many years absence. In the
sixities (really) I was a Fortran programmer. My last scientific
coding of any significance used BBC Basic (well-written, I would
claim ... and for a very sophisticated engineering requirement) around
1983. So, I have been "out of it" for a long time. I have been
exclusively a Mac user for about 22 years now. I attempted to
resurrect my skills with RealBasic but abandoned that because the
result is not platform independent. I looked at Java and gave up in
disgust ... I found Python and thought that this was the "answer to a
maidens prayer". A couple of weeks later, I still feel it would be,
except I need help with a pin to unpick the lock on the chastity belt,
as it were. I am left with the impression that there is a complicated
software infrastructure underlying Python which is difficult to
control and horribly temperamental. I need someone to talk to!!!! I
live in the wilds of Anglesey and there are only rain-soaked sheep
here. Can anyone throw me a lifeline?

I also have a very specific question, concerning a problem which has
me at an absolute stop ..... please remember I am VERY new to Python
on the Mac. The specific problem is this ....

I have been writing some very simple math applications and running
them using IDLE. To start with the applications worked OK. However,as
time has progressed, the error message "ImportError: No module named
****" has been generated with increasing frequency. It has now become
impossible to use Python effectively. For example, I create a small
file called MiniLibrary.py and save it to the desktop. I type at the
>>> prompt, in the terminal window import MiniLibrary. At one time
this would have generated a new file MiniLibrary.pyc on the desktop
and returned a new prompt >>>. No longer. Now the error message
"ImportError: No module named MiniLibrary". Further information: I am
running Python 2.5.1. The computer is a Dual G5 Power PC running OSX
10.4.10. Can anyone help? I am at my wits end and quietly
contemplating giving up all attempts at scientific programming on a
Mac.
