Sadly I'm not going to be able to make tonight - annoying, as Mark's project looks absolutely brilliant (I'm sure there are several Usenet posts I could dig up from my past with blocky diagrams that would benefit from such a treatment!). Were I able to make it, I would twist Mark's arm into getting this registered on PyPI and then bribe him with beer for a sphinx plugin. Can I assume someone else might be up to such a task? The arm twisting and bribery that is! :) In the meantime, if anyone's ever had the dubious pleasure of having to deal with Microsoft's OLE Compound Document format (the old school format for most office files, but now also used as the basis for the "Advanced Authoring Format"), I've recently waded into writing a library for reading them (it seems some of the CT scanners that various of Holly's colleagues are using, output data in this format). The preliminaries are here: https://github.com/waveform80/compound_files - and I should have docs and PyPI bits up sometime tomorrow. Comments/suggestions/bug fixes all gratefully accepted. The main reason I mention it is that while implementing cyclical detection of FAT chains I got a chance to use the tortoise'n'hare algorithm that Robie mentioned at the last social! Incidentally, there was already a library for reading such files: OleFileIO (part of PIL), and the improved OleFileIO_PL. Unfortunately, both turned out to be too buggy to read the 30+Gb files the CT scanner chucks out, and their code was so horrendously messy I just decided to start from scratch. Anyway, have fun this evening and hopefully I'll catch up with everyone at the next social!
