For me I notice reading the above (especially in monospace font) the 2
spaces are jarring, and distract me from the material I'm reading.
FWIW, I'm with you on that. But I think it's just one of those
aesthetic / what-you-grew-up-with things. You're never going
to find consensus, only an amicable compromise. Or a house-style
to follow.
What's really weird: The Harbrace College handbook says "Two spaces
follow the period, question mark ...." Yet the book consistently uses
one space in its own text!
