"Way too many"? We rarely get more than 10 messages a day. There have only been 73 for the whole month of August. Do you know that you have the option of getting a "digest", where it only sends you one message per day? Follow the link at the bottom of each message to get to a place where you can set this up. Mailman doesn't provide a way to do simple renaming, other than running a shell command on the server itself.
