Tim, The problem with Win32_PortableBattery appears to be that I need to use Win32_Battery instead.
Using the latter, everything works as expected. I'm not entirely clear on why there are 2 battery classes and why I would choose to use vs. the other, but I suspect the Win32_PortableBattery class is for machines with advanced power supply management capabilities.
