I disable the option on some ports I build for my own pkg repository, like this

This isn't kde@. Even with the best update reminder pings in existence, I and
the others in python@ are inevitably going to forget even small things like
syncing docs because it will be out of sight/out of mind. This effect is
especially pronounced when others not directly involved with port maintenance
unduly rush us in updating stuff.

subpackages won't save you, since the build process, including build
dependencies, is unchanged, only what gets packaged where.
