Hello,

I'm working on a project to create a tool/plug-in that will create and
simulate an Asteroid impacting a planetary surface. Part of the effect
will be the displacement of the surface the Astral Body impacts with.

What I intend to do is to select only the required section of geometry
that will be affected by the impact. For example, if I were to place a
locator where the impact is to occur, then I would, dependant on the
strength/energy involved (set by the user), select the applicable area
and convert that to a soft body, or cloth surface.

To select only a portion of an object I've been told would require use
of the API. I have very little to no experience working with the API
and so I do not know where to begin.

If anyone can help me by pointing me in the right direction, or even
suggesting example code of similar examples that would be most helpful
and very much appreciated.

For a simple test example to relate to the application id be using the
code for; say the scene is a plane that has a high enough subDivision
density, and the area to be selected is a triangle from a triangle
point, travelling outward to the opposite edge. A locator is also
placed at this point to simulate the impact origin.
