I've stumbled upon something similar in getDensityMode method in
MFnFluid class.
Api descirbed defition of this method as getDensityMode
( FluidMethod &mode, FluidGradient &gradient ) and I didn't
found a way to use it. I'll be happy if anyone know how to use this
method properly.
Using getPerParticleAttribute method with try/except should work in
your case.
