yeah, for a first try i'm going to hook into this to make a dynamic  
mel command generator for python functions.  more of an experiment  
really since we don't need it at luma.  i'll see if it can be done as  
a class so that others can subclass it for their own use -- the  
bookkeeping should be fairly simple (famous last words?)
