Eclipse is great.Definitely give it a try. One problem was due to OS kubuntu 9.10 where some of the buttons weren't working properly. So googled and fixed it.
Another was when installing Pydev from http://pydev.org/updates...Which kept saying couldn't find any repositories...but that was due to network traffic/issues. After a few tries it worked. just those minor issues. The rest was smooth. Pymel auto completion works like in the Pymel doc. Did a manual Pymel install btw. You can also install the Maya Editor for Eclipse http://www.creativecrash.com/tutorials/using-eclipse-as-a-maya-ide#tabs Check out the showmedo eclipse intro videos for a nice intro.
